Kickstart A Documentary For Evanna Lynch’s ‘Houdini’
Posted by Megs

Potter fan, and MM reader, Paul has uncovered a Kickstarter page that is raising money to create a documentary for Houdini, the new play Evanna is starring in. They are looking to raise £7,500 and have 24 days left! On their page they state:

As students our long term goals often seem like huge mountains and the idea of producing our own show leave you not sure where to start. This is due to the limited experience and knowledge we currently have. Magic in the Making will allow us to change all that and to view and understand the production of an incredible show that contains a vast amount of different aspects; from stunts, to make-up, set design and the in-depth characters that are developed in the play.

We would love to document the process of this journey as we believe the footage captured will help provide the kind of invaluable knowledge that can not be taught, only experienced. That is why it is now down to us to ensure we get the rest of this incredible journey on record. Filming each day, we are going to be bringing the recorded view of what goes on behind the scenes in the development of Houdini.

But to do this we need your help! And for helping, we’re going to be generous! For every pledge we will ensure you get a DVD copy of our Documentary! And… we have some other terrific rewards for you…. [view the Kickstarter page to see the rest of the rewards!]

Katie Leung to Star In Short Film – Donate with Kickstarter
Posted by Megs

Katie Leung, who played Cho Chang in the Potter films, is set to star in a new short film by Daniel and Ateh Jewel.  The film is called Sun Never Sets and is a Sci-Fi Short Film Set in the Near Future Shanghai that also stars Derek Jacobi. The filmmakers are hoping to film in Autumn over a five day shoot and to complete the main post-production of the film by December 2013/January 2014, and to have the film ready to submit to film festivals by February 2014.

The husband/wife team is raising money for production using Kickstarter, a website that helps people raise money to fuel their creative projects. They are trying to raise £25,000 so if you wish to donate visit their Kickstarter page! They have 58 days left to raise the money so anything you can do to help would be appreciated.  They have different backing options and for those people who pledge a certain amount you get various incentives from email updates on the production all the way to tickets to private screenings and visits to the set!

A synopsis of the film is as follows:

Sun Never Sets is set in the near future where China has become the undisputed world power and the West is in disarray. Now, the tired and hungry people of Europe are fleeing to the great cities of China to seek a new life as economic migrants.  Against this backdrop, a Chinese-born Englishman named HEDGES has decided to turn his back on the tide of history by taking his adopted daughter KATIE to a small abandoned island downstream from Shanghai, where his British ancestors used to trade to China from in the nineteenth century.
He has rebooted the abandoned island and staffed it with illegal English immigrants to China, creating his own world as if the British Empire had never fallen. The island is off the grid and has no electricity or running water.  The small community living under Hedges use gas lamps, so it’s as if they are living a British version of an Amish village.  One day a wealthy English family, who have started a successful new life in Shanghai, crash their boat on the shores of the island. Hedges and Katie are forced to take them into their community. The arrival of the family sparks off something in Katie – who has always wondered what life might be like away from the island. She spends her evenings gazing at the neon haze of Shanghai, which she can see through her grimy bedroom window. Katie can see how at ease the family are with life in Shanghai; they speak fluent Mandarin and are fully accepted into Chinese society, and this leads her to question everything Hedges has told her about the modern world. This brings her into conflict with Hedges, especially when the young son of the family, TOM, offers to take her back to Shanghai with them.  In the climax of the film, Katie is pressured to make life-changing choices, which ultimately reveal the dark history of the British Empire in China and Hedges’s ancestors involvement in the Opium Wars.

Donate to JK Rowling’s Birthday Fundraiser & Enter To Win Great Prizes
Posted by Megs

Harry Potter fan Becca is raising money for LUMOS as a gift to Potter author J.K. Rowling for her birthday.  If giving Jo a great birthday present isn’t enough to make you want to donate, this might help: All donations will be entered to win one of many great prizes, including signed photos by actors, and even a signed copy of  The Casual Vacancy! If you would like to be entered into the prize draw please have a read of the FAQs/Ts&Cs before donating as they contain important info.

Some more information on the fundraiser may be read below:

What is Light Up Jo’s Birthday?

JK Rowling’s 48th birthday is on the 31st July 2013. Every year, fans come together to create projects for Jo’s birthday- books, videos and websites filled with messages of love for the woman who changed the lives of millions around the world. But actions speak louder than words, so what better way to express our love for Jo than by helping a cause close to her heart?

Last year, in Light Up Jo’s Birthday’s first year, we raised over £1,000 for Lumos. Jo said it was one of the best birthday presents she had ever received. So what are we going to do this year? We’re going to do it bigger and better!

Who are Lumos?

Lumos is a charity founded by JK Rowling which aims to end the institutionalisation of children around the world. To find out more, hover over Lumos’s logo to the left. Last year the money raised by Light Up Jo’s Birthday went towards making a school accessible, so that disabled children can attend mainstream school and stay with their families instead of having to go into an institution.

If everyone who reads this donated just £1, which is less than the cost of sending Jo a birthday card, we could make a real difference to many children’s lives again.

Daniel Radcliffe to Guest Star on The Simpsons
Posted by Megs

Daniel Radcliffe will once again be lending his voice to a character on The Simpsons.  He will be voicing a character named Diggs. In the episode airing this season, Bart will encounter Diggs, a strange older boy with a passion for falconry, among other things. “Diggs is a combination of Holden Caulfield, Finny from A Separate Peace and the kids in Lord of the Flies — only a little more screwed up,” executive producer Al Jean tells EW.

Thanks to Mugglenet (and their reader Kayleen) for the tip!
