Spend a Day with JKR with help from Barbie
Posted by Megs

The Barbie I Can Be website has announced that girls aged 6 to 14 have the chance to win the chance to shadow JK Rowling for a day!  Makes me wish I was a little girl again 😉

Barbie™ is looking nationwide for a few girls (ages 6-14) to dream big, shadow one of Barbie’s 10 Women to Watch in 2010 and report about their mentoring experiences. Adults can suggest their daughter or a special girl in their life until March 22, 2010.

Each girl selected and her parent or legal guardian will travel to a one-day mentoring session with one of the 10 Women to Watch in 2010 before April 16, 2010.

Girls will be asked to report on their experiences by shooting footage with a video camera (provided), taking photos with a digital camera (provided) and writing a brief report about their day and how they were inspired. We also plan to capture the day with video and photos, then share these events and reports online and maybe even in print or on TV so girls everywhere can be inspired!

Additionally, selected girls and their parent or guardian will be invited to travel to and attend an invitation-only Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work® Day event on April 22, 2010 (location to be determined). Travel and
accommodations provided.

Thanks Leaky!

New Site Feature: Collectible of the Week (Opinions?)
Posted by Megs

Hello everyone, well I think it is safe to say that the idea of a Monthly Competition for the site didn’t work out. I’ve only gotten 1 entry in 2 months. So I think we are going to scrap that idea. BUT while I was in class today I thought of a great feature for the site: Collectible of the Week! What I will do is this:

As you may know, I am a HUGE Harry Potter collector so once a week (probably Sunday) I will go through my Harry Potter collection (photos) and pick out 1 item and take some photos of it.  Then I will describe the item, tell you how the quality is, if it is rare or can be found anywhere, the current value (if I can find that out), rate it, tell you where you can purchase it and more!  I will do this for rare items and your run-of-the-mill items like coloring books, etc.!  You can even suggest what you want me to review/talk about.

What do you all think? Good idea? PLEASE comment so I know if people are interested in the idea.

Richard, Ciaran and Brendan: Top 5 Irish Actors
Posted by Megs

Movies.ie, an Irish movie site, has posted a list of who they think are the Top 10 Irish actors.  The late Richard Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Ciaran Hinds made the list!

2. Richard Harris: Born in Limerick in 1930, Harris moved to England in the hope of becoming a director. An exceptionally difficult career to get into in those days, Harris instead got into acting and we’re very glad he did. Harris was a versatile and powerful screen actor with career highlights being This Sporting Life (his first starring role), Camelot and The Field. He appeared as Dumbledore in the first two installments of the Harry Potter series before his death in 2002.

4. Brendan Gleeson: Brendan Gleeson has carved out a great career for himself – with key roles in Hollywood fare, prestigious parts in worthy TV drama (he won an Emmy for his role as Churchill) and occasionally popping home to work with up and coming Irish talent (In Bruges, Perrier’s Bounty). He is currently rubbing shoulders with the Hollywood elite as he takes a central role as a CIA operative in Paul Greengrass’ Iraq thriller Green Zone; for which he does a very convincing Southern American accent.

8. Ciaran Hinds: Perhaps not the most familiar name on our list, chances are you’ll at least recognise the face. Despite treading the boards almost constantly, he also has a huge list of great films to his name. Hinds shows up in many of the best films of the last twenty years including Munich, There Will Be Blood, In Bruges and the recent winner of Best Film at the IFTA’s; Eclipse. Soon to be seen in Todd Solondz’s Life During Wartime.

You can also pay $10 for a raffle ticket to win all 7 book signed by Mary! There are a number of different seating options, some include signed books and illustrations from Mary and VIP seating.

UPDATE: I contacted the school to ask if anyone can enter the raffle for signed books and they have let me know that anyone can enter the raffle as long as they live in the United States!  They also said that “It may be of interest to you and other Harry Potter fans to learn that Mary has said that in addition to signing the books, she may draw a small illustration in each, making them even more valuable!”
