In a new interview Rupert Grint and Richard Griffiths discuss the fact that they haven’t won many awards for the Harry Potter films.
Today Grint, 22, said the cast have all but given up hope of being honoured at the Academy Awards, while veteran actor Richard Griffiths, who plays Vernon Dursley in the series, said he believed “something is going on”. When asked why the franchise had not received major nominations again, Grint said: “We don’t expect it.”
Laurence Olivier and Tony award-winner Griffiths, 63, said: “It’s sad it’s only technical awards and not artistic ones. It’s the biggest movie phenomenon on the planet. I remember when ET was the highest earning movie of all time – $870 million. With Harry Potter, you’re talking $6 billion. Guys? Something’s going on! Why don’t you honour it?”
So far, the franchise has been nominated for nine Oscars in technical categories, but has not won one. The six movies have also been snubbed at the Baftas, having been nominated for 20 awards in total, predominantly for technical categories. They have only won one – best production design for Goblet Of Fire.
The final film, Deathly Hallows Part 2, is due for release in July and will be the saga’s final shot at Oscar glory. Grint said: “Either way, the final movie will be huge. We did some re-shoots at the end of the year. We’re really going to go out with a bang. That’s everyone’s goal really. It’s kind of going to be pretty epic.” He praised the achievements of the technical crew, saying: “It would be great to see the technical [team receive] recognition. They devote their whole lives to it.”
Fans in the UK are getting a special treat if they are a fan of Harry Potter on Facebook. Emma Watson has announced via a video on the page that there are two different designs for the BluRay cover of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I and want you to decide which one is used! Both covers feature the image of the trio running in the forest, just placed differently.
