A Young Doctor’s Notebook Returning for Season 2 with Daniel Radcliffe
Posted by Megs

It has been confirmed that Daniel Radcliffe will be returning for a second season of A Young Doctor’s Notebook & Other Stories on SkyArts.  The first season will be airing on Ovation this Fall for fans in the US, we will post when a release date is available. A press release from SkyArts may be read below:

A YOUNG DOCTOR’S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES – the most successful series in the history of Sky Arts – will return for a second series as part of the Playhouse Presents strand. Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe will reprise their roles, with Hamm playing a Russian doctor during the Russian Revolution, and Radcliffe his younger self. Customers will be able to watch the new series on Sky Arts 1 HD and On Demand later in 2013.

A YOUNG DOCTOR’S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES is a comedy drama inspired by a selection of further works by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov, including the semi-autobiographical story, Morphine. The series returns to the small village of Muryevo in 1918 to find the Young Doctor (Daniel Radcliffe) battling against an all-consuming morphine addiction. Under the critical gaze of his “clean” older self (Jon Hamm), the Young Doctor struggles to cope with life in the hospital, the Civil War, and the arrival of Natasha, played by fast rising newcomer, Margaret Clunie, a beautiful young aristocrat. Adam Godley will reprise his role as The Feldsher alongside Rosie Cavaliero and Vicki Pepperdine as Pelageya and Anna respectively.

Jon Hamm says: “I’m thrilled to come back to our wonderful, weird, wild world of A Young Doctor’s Notebook. Series one was an absolute blast to work on and I’m looking forward to continuing this bizarre adventure.”

Daniel Radcliffe says: “I had absolutely no hesitation in agreeing to do a second series of A Young Doctor’s Notebook. I had an incredible time working with the multi talented Jon Hamm and of course am a huge fan of Mikhail Bulgakov’s work and so was thrilled when I was told a second series had been commissioned. I am also greatly looking forward to working with our new director Robert McKillop and cannot wait to commence filming this summer.”

The 4 x 30’ series is produced by multi award-wining Big Talk Productions, in association with Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt’s Point West Pictures. It was commissioned by Lucy Lumsden and is executive produced by Kenton Allen for Big Talk Productions, Jon Hamm for Point West Pictures and Jon Mountague for Sky. The director is Robert McKillop and the producer is Clelia Mountford. The series was written by Mark Chappell, Shaun Pye and Alan Connor, based on an idea by Clelia Mountford.

A YOUNG DOCTOR’S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES marks a further development of the Playhouse Presents strand which champions innovative productions and original writing, and which underlines Sky’s promise to deliver high-quality, exclusive content to customers, supported by a commitment to increase investment in home-grown programming to £600 million by 2014, an increase of more than 50% over three years. The first series is currently available to download as a box set from Sky’s On Demand service.

James Hunt, Director, Sky Arts says, “I am absolutely thrilled to bring the most talented double act of our generation back to Sky Arts. A Young Doctor’s Notebook was the channel’s most successful programme to date and was unanimously loved by our customers. It is a perfect fit for our Playhouse Presents strand with its world class talent both on and off screen.”

Lucy Lumsden, Head of Comedy, Sky says: “We’re delighted that this supremely talented cast has been able to reunite in another dose of the darkly comic series A Young Doctor’s Notebook.”

A YOUNG DOCTOR’S NOTEBOOK and A YOUNG DOCTOR’S NOTEBOOK & OTHER STORIES is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide. They will be available to view in North America on the Ovation network later in 2013/14.

New UK Cover for Goblet of Fire Released as well as Full Artwork for Books 1-4

Also, thanks to SnitchSeeker, we know that the original artwork for the first four covers have been released via CreativeReview. They posted an article which contained some fun information on how the covers were created and some information about the illustrator, Andrew Davidson.  You can see all the original artwork in the gallery.

Andrew Davidson has produced a beautifully detailed set of hand engraved illustrations for the cover of adult editions of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels. Davidson was commissioned by Bloomsbury, who will publish the series and Webb & Webb, who are designing the covers.

The illustrations were created by printing hand crafted wood engravings made on nine by seven-inch English boxwood onto Japanese paper, “which seemed to create the perfect effect,” says Davidson. “I wanted them to look as if they had come straight from the pages of a book taken from the library at Hogwarts [the boarding school for wizard’s where the books are set].”

The project took around two and a half months to complete, and each of Davidson’s illustrations represents a key scene, character or setting from that novel: designs for early books in the series feature the Hogwarts Express train and Gothic castle, while later covers have a darker feel and feature ghouls, skulls and serpents.

“Each image aims to capture the spirit and setting of each book – as the stories become darker, so do the engravings. There are also hidden clues in each of the illustrations to look out for…” he adds.

The first three books have been be available since 18th July 2013. The next two on 15th August 2013 and the final two on 26th September 2013. A boxed set containing all seven jackets will be available in October 2013.

Robert-Galbraith.com Now Live; Includes Extensive FAQ section
Posted by Megs

A new official site for J.K. Rowling’s pseudonym Robert Galbraith is now online at Robert-Galbraith.com. The website features information about the book as well as a FAQ section where Rowling has answered some burning questions about the book and her alias. Some questions are as follows:

Why did you choose to write a crime novel and why under a pseudonym? I’ve always loved reading detective fiction. Most of the Harry Potter stories are whodunits at heart (‘Order of the Phoenix’ is more of a why-did-he), but I’ve wanted to try the real thing for a long time. As for the pseudonym, I was yearning to go back to the beginning of a writing career in this new genre, to work without hype or expectation and to receive totally unvarnished feedback. It was a fantastic experience and I only wish it could have gone on a little longer.

Have you previously signed any copies as Robert Galbraith? How do we know they are genuine? Yes, I was asked by the publisher to sign a few copies of ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’ as Robert Galbraith that were made available for sale around publication. While we can’t verify whether any particular book currently on eBay etc is genuine, any future books I sign in this way will be authenticated. My Robert Galbraith signature is distinctive and consistent; I spent a whole weekend practicing it to make sure.

Was revealing the true identity of Robert Galbraith not simply an elaborate marketing campaign to help boost sales? If anyone had seen the labyrinthine plans I laid to conceal my identity (or indeed my expression when I realised that the game was up!) they would realise how little I wanted to be discovered. I hoped to keep the secret as long as possible. I’m grateful for all the feedback from publishers and readers, and for some great reviews. Being Robert Galbraith has been all about the work, which is my favourite part of being a writer. This was not a leak or marketing ploy by me, my publisher or agent, both of whom have been completely supportive of my desire to fly under the radar. If sales were what mattered to me most, I would have written under my own name from the start, and with the greatest fanfare.

At the point I was ‘outed’, Robert had sold 8500 English language copies across all formats (hardback, eBook, library and audiobook) and received two offers from television production companies. The situation was becoming increasingly complicated, largely because Robert was doing rather better than we had expected him to, but we all still hoped to keep the secret a little longer. Yet Robert’s success during his first three months as a published writer (discounting sales made after I was found out) actually compares favourably with J.K. Rowling’s success over the equivalent period of her career!

Why the name Robert Galbraith? Do you have anything to say to all those Robert Galbraiths out there? I can only hope all the real Robert Galbraiths out there will be as forgiving as the real Harry Potters have been. I must say, I don’t think their plight is quite as embarrassing. I chose Robert because it is one of my favourite men’s names, because Robert F Kennedy is my hero and because, mercifully, I hadn’t used it for any of the characters in the Potter series or ‘The Casual Vacancy’.

Galbraith came about for a slightly odd reason. When I was a child, I really wanted to be called ‘Ella Galbraith’, and I’ve no idea why. I don’t even know how I knew that the surname existed, because I can’t remember ever meeting anyone with it. Be that as it may, the name had a fascination for me. I actually considered calling myself L A Galbraith for the Strike series, but for fairly obvious reasons decided that initials were a bad idea.

Odder still, there was a well-known economist called J K Galbraith, something I only remembered by the time it was far too late. I was completely paranoid that people might take this as a clue and land at my real identity, but thankfully nobody was looking that deeply at the author’s name.

What research did you do to write ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’? I interviewed serving and ex-military people for as long as they would let me bother them. In fact, all my factual information came from military sources. I know a number of soldiers (both serving and veterans) and I’m close to two people in particular who were incredibly generous as I researched my hero’s background (they also helped me construct a CV for Robert). One of these friends is from the SIB. So while Strike himself is entirely fictional, his career and the experiences he’s had are based on factual accounts of real soldiers.

When the novel opens, Strike is seriously down on his luck. One of the reviews I treasured most (before Robert was unmasked) said that my hero faced his situation ‘with resolve, instead of clichéd self-destruction.’ I gave Strike many of the qualities of the military people to whom I am closest: strength of character, black humour, resilience and ingenuity.

I did a vast amount of research on below knee amputations and I also visited a lot of London pubs. The research involved in creating a contemporary novel was a huge part of the pleasure.
