What was it like shooting that final battle?
The way we filmed it was confusing, because we filmed both parts simultaneously. So some days we’d be doing a Part One scene, then a huge battle. It was quite hard to keep track of what was going on in Part Two, so I’ll be quite interested to see how it’s all been put together. But the battle sequences are great, I think. It was just so big and epic; there was one scene in the courtyard where it’s one big, continuous shot and they have five cameras picking up everything, and there’s giants and fire and big craters. Even for Harry Potter, it felt really huge. These sets, they did actually destroy them. The rubble you see is actually the set falling apart. It’s quite weird seeing all these sets that I’ve grown up in as piles of rubble, there’s something strange about that. But it’s going to be amazing.

The world’s biggest film series ever is coming to end this summer with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two, and what better way to mark the occasion by half killing ourselves assembling an exhaustive tribute to the series in its entirely. We visited the Leavesden set, we flew to New York to photograph and chat to Daniel Radcliffe during a break from his current stint on Broadway, and we even ventured deep into the shadowy Warner Brothers archives to emerge, blinking, into the daylight holding sheaves of never-before-seen photos from the sets of all eight films. Including interviews from key cast and crew from all the films and boasting some of the most gorgeous photography this side of the Daily Prophet, here’s the inside scoop on the whole history of Potter.

He admits it is odd not to be working with the rest of the cast any more, saying: “These films account for 11 years of my life, so it’s really very strange to finally have finished them. Potter gives you a safety net, so that if you go off in between you always know you will be coming back to Potter. Suddenly that will be taken away, so on a professional level it’s a bit frightening.”
“It turned into a bit of a war film. We all formed this army – the castle is on fire, with rubble and bodies littered everywhere. It’s shocking, really – and they’re all kids as well.”
Emma says she has enjoyed growing up with her character. She adds: “I do love Hermione. Being around the boys has definitely changed her – she’s loosened up a bit. She’s becoming a woman.”
