It’s one of those beloved rites of passage all youngsters cherish and look forward to – the ditching of the school uniform. It doesn’t matter how much you tart it up – allowing girls to wear trousers, no tie, etc. – school uniforms aren’t designed as cool teenage wear, just ask Daniel Radcliffe. The 19-year-old actor has been wearing one as cinematic alter-ego Harry Potter for years and as the sixth movie, The Half-Blood Prince, hits cinemas today, he’s dishing the dirt on the Hogwarts dress.
“One of the worst things to be wearing while trying to chat up a girl is a school uniform,” reveals the young star who as Harry romanced Cho Chang (Katie Leung) in Order of the Phoenix and might be looking to get friendly with Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright), the younger sister of best mate, Ron (Rupert Grint) in The Half-Blood Prince. “You look like a kid! You’re not going to score dressed like that.”
Thankfully for Dan, Harry won’t be dressed like that for much longer as the final two instalments of the Harry Potter franchise, The Deathly Hallows: Parts I and II see the boy wizard leave Hogwarts and its uniform and he’s glad the ordeal is over. “I was like “Burn it!” I was hoping they’d throw them on a giant bonfire. Oh my God, to be done with that uniform and those shoes, that was an exciting day.”
Co-star Grint clearly felt differently, keeping one of Ron’s neck-ties as a souvenir, but with the action moving away from the school room, it invites the question: what exciting street clothes can we expect from Harry in The Deathly Hallows? Unfortunately, we won’t find out until it’s released in November 2010, dammit!
