Mary GrandPre, the Harry Potter illustrator in the US, has recently done a new interview with the Detroit Free Press.

“I try to make everything have a meaning. … There is a reason why something is in the illustration. I don’t just put it in because it looks better. It really does have to have a meaning or part of the story has to support it.”

“Besides Harry, I would say Hagrid is my favorite character,” Mary says. In fact, Mary has a dog named Chopper that reminds her of Hagrid. He’s a doggie mix: part St. Bernard, part collie, part lab. “He’s a big, wonderful, lovable mutt,” Mary says. He’s also her real-life inspiration for the loveable giant, Hagrid.
