Physics experts at Salford University have been given a £1million grant to design materials that can hide solid objects by bending light around them. It could mean that invisibility cloaks, which make people and objects disappear from view, like the one used by the boy wizard in the JK Rowling books, will one day become a reality.
A team of experts are working on the latest generation of materials which will radically change the way that light behaves.
The new “meta-materials” are made by inserting metal wires – a fraction of a hair-width – into another material such as plastic or glass. The introduction of the metals will create an electromagnetic force which would make light flow around a hidden object, just as water in a river flows around a smooth rock
